Straight from the Horse’s mouth:

Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we as humans shall come to understand each other. — Dr. Louis J. Camuti

Wonder

I wonder at times
how it could have been
if you hadn’t been rescued
starved, scared and distrusting.

I wonder at times
how it could have been
if you had been born
on my farm,
and as a foal I could have
embraced your birth
with warm and gentle kisses.

I wonder at times
how it could have been
if you had never been whipped or humiliated.
If instead, you had been nurtured with hot bran mashes
in the cold winter nights
of your childhood….

Of Horses and Mythology – Medusa’s Wisdom

Written by Dulce Garcia for Equus Spirit Magazine

Oh, my warrior hero!
Your winged horse form flashes across the starred sky,
and as my chest swells with the warmth of sweet anticipation,
I ask, what messages do you bring from the Unseen realms?
Are you man or beast, fallen angel or immortal god?
What mysteries lie hidden behind the deep abyss of your sad eyes?
Dare I look behind the Medusa mask that you like to wear in those chilling moments of terrible revelation?

I have been carried on your back with indescribable grace,
I have been thrown from your back
and known the power of your fury.
Are you to be trusted or feared, or both?
And do you love me, I wonder?

Your equine figure roars up
and the clash of thunder is everywhere,
You rear and buck and your eyes bulge with wrathful anger.
You have a lion’s face and snakes adorn your head.
“I have much to teach you, beloved daughter,”
I hear you whisper in my heart.

“Behold this frightful image,
feared by men from beginning-less time.
I am the wrathful warrior
that has taken men into countless battles.
I have died many deaths
and have been reborn as angel and demon.
Dare you look at this wounded soul,
angered and betrayed by the folly of man?
Dare you remove the Gorgon’s mask
and behold the reflection of your own face?”

I approach you slowly,
and caress your flowing mane with my trembling hands.
I close my eyes and wrap my arms around your neck,
possessed by the warm embrace of aspiring Love.

Demon or angel? I do not care!
With your demon fire you remind us of the tragic history of mortal man.
Under your angel wings, we are reminded
of the graceful path of our immortal souls.
From the blood of Medusa sprang forth the winged Pegasus,
to guide our journeys into the graceful realms of the Spirit World
–or so I’ve heard.

Take flight my winged demon-angel of perfect Beauty!
I will risk to be taken on your back
through the magical lands of forbidden knowledge.
As I mount, your powerful body lifts me up
to touch the silvery moon of my childhood,
and I know that your love for me is eternal.

Uncertainty

As I approached your stall that cold morning,
paralyzed with fear over your colic
because they couldn’t tell me if you would live or die,
I was determined to Reiki you back to perfect health.

You just stood there, hurting,
yet solid in your own power.
Your butt was turned to me,
And I could see the labored breath of your round belly.
You turned your right eye gently towards me,
Acknowledging my fear, as you always do.

And you said “It’s going to be okay,
Come closer and have the courage
to be present with my pain
and with the uncertainty of this day
and the days to come……who knows how many?”

I gently touched my nostrils to yours
and in your hot, humid breath
I found my own!
